No Tourist Allowed!

Read James 1: 22-25
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

“In my estimation, one mission trip is worth more than fifty-two sermons! We are already educated way beyond the level of our obedience. What we need most is not another sermon. Please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying. We need to study the Word of God diligently. But we don’t need to know more. We need to do more with what we know. At the end of the day, God will not say, ‘Well thought, Intellectual!’ or ‘Well said, Orator!’ There is only one commendation: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’” – Mark Batterson, ALL IN

On this trip we are NOT tourists.

This week is not about sightseeing.

  • A Tourist is a Sightseer – A Missionary is a sight”doer”
  • A Tourist focuses on the destination – A missionary is focused on the people.
  • A Tourist takes a “day trip”  – A Missionary looks for eternity.
  • A Tourist expects service –  A Missionary expects to serve.

Let’s get our hands dirty, our hearts broken, and our minds transformed.  Let’s experience showing the love of Jesus Christ. Don’t let the language be a barrier to keep you from reaching out. God will use your kindness – hard work – and big smile to speak volumes to those around you.

Lord, How do You want to work in my heart today?

This post is a devotion for the Thomas Road Baptist Church Guatemala Team serving along side of World Help at Hope of Life in Guatemala.

While I wrote this for a team serving in Guatemala this week, it can also apply to your Life Group and ministry in your hometown.  How can you go beyond observing what is happening around you?

The Unexpected

We planned to leave on Friday for Guatemala and wrote the devotion below for Friday night.

God is at work in the UNEXPECTED. What was unexpected to us was no surprise to God.

I will be sharing the team devotions each day of week so that you can follow along with us.  Prayers Appreciated.

Devotion 1

Psalm 62:5-8
Find rest my soul, in God alone,
My hope comes from Him
He alone is my rock and my salvation
He is my fortress, I will not be shaken
My salvation and my honor depend on God
He is my mighty rock, my refuge
Trust in Him at all times, O people
Pour out your hearts to Him
For God is our refuge.

God is not surprised by the snow or by the time line He has us on this week. Perhaps He will put us in the path of different people because of this situation. Maybe there will be someone at the airport who needs an encouraging word from you.

Let’s be on the lookout for God working in the Unexpected today.
